Master Thesis Opportunity: Optimization for Sustainable Electric Powertrains

Company: BorgWarner
Location: Landskrona, Sweden
Field: Mechatronics, Sustainability, Optimization

Background:
Join BorgWarner, a global leader in clean and efficient automotive technologies, as we work to reduce the carbon footprint of our hybrid, electric, and combustion vehicles. At our Landskrona site, we develop driveline and propulsion systems for world-renowned manufacturers, with a focus on sustainability in product design.

The design of an electric vehicle powertrain involves balancing multiple factors—weight, cost, performance, and energy consumption. For this master thesis, you’ll integrate a sustainability metric (CO2 eq) into a powertrain optimizer tool, helping us make carbon footprint a key design target. You’ll also explore the trade-offs between cost, energy efficiency, and sustainability in the powertrain optimization process.

Thesis Assignments:
Implement a CO2 eq sustainability metric into a powertrain optimizer.
Investigate design trade-offs, comparing cost vs. energy consumption and sustainable solutions.
Apply the upgraded powertrain optimizer tool to an integrated Drive Module (iDM)

Results:
The project will culminate in a written report and an oral presentation at BorgWarner in Landskrona.

Requirements:
We are looking for 1-2 motivated students with a background in mechatronics (preferred) or similar and an interest in optimization and sustainability. Matlab experience is required.

How to Apply:
If you’re excited to contribute to the future of sustainable automotive technology, contact Stefan Liedman at sliedman@borgwarner.com
Please send your CV and a personal motivation letter explaining why you’re interested in this project.

We look forward to hearing from you!
