CiSMA, Circular Steel for Mass-Market Applications

The aim of the project is to develop a validated methodology to introduce scrap-based EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) steel into mass-market consumer goods with high quality requirements currently served with Blast Furnace+ BOF (Basic Oxigen Furnace)-produced steel.

This objective implies gaining knowledge on which trace elements are present in the available fluxes of scrap, determine how these trace elements affect steel properties (notably formability, strength, toughness, surface chemistry and corrosion resistance) and establish safe thresholds for established use cases. The pursued use cases correspond to consumer goods where BOF is used due to composition requirements.

BTH will contribute with FE-model-based feasibility study of using scrap-based EAF steel in manufacturing and test influence of altered properties of recycled steel in forming manufacturing processes. Also, develop Digital Twin using FE-model and machine learning to compute corrective measure for forming manufacturing processes to mitigate the effect of high variability in such steel.
